Tips and Advice
By the time spring arrives most people are ready to get outside and start working on yard projects. The following list will ensure your garden will be in top shape for summer. - Rake the yard - Winter clean up starts with raking . There are usually leaves, dead grass and old plants that need to be cleaned up. - Plant Grass – If you have dead spots on the lawn, now is the best time to replant. - Get your lawn mower tuned up – There is nothing more frustrating than having a broken lawnmower when the grass is 8 inches tall and you only have 1 hour to get it mowed. - Cut back plants – Trim off the dead material from last year’s growth. - Fill bird feeders – The birds are migrating through. Spring is a great chance to see many birds that do not stay in Wisconsin all summer. - Don’t dig or till too early – If a handful of soil sticks together in your hand, it is too wet to work with. Wait for the soil to crumble in your hands. - Start weeding early - Weeds are easy to pull when they have a small root structure. As soon as they start growing, start pulling. - Edging – Grass grows fast in the spring. Try to edge your flower beds and sidewalks early to keep the work to a minimum later. - Start your seeds – If you grow a vegetable garden start your seeds indoors so you can plant them in your garden around May 15th. Egg cartons work great for starting seeds. - Plan your projects – Spring is a great time to decide what you want to do for the year. Plan small steps. It can get overwhelming if you think too big too soon. Make a list and set some goals.
